A storm at sea, a frightened king, and the trials that started twa hunner year ae it.

In 1590 James the Sixth sailed hame fae Denmark wi his new queen and near enough didnae make it. The weather battered them the whole way and twa attempts had tae be abandoned.

A king could have called that whit it was, which is the North Sea in winter. He didnae. He decided somebody had raised it deliberately, and he went looking fur them in North Berwick.

Aboot seventy folk were caught up in it. Agnes Sampson was a midwife and a healer, an aulder woman who'd spent her life helping folk in that toun. She was tortured until she agreed tae whitever they pit in front ae her, and then she was strangled and burnt oan Castlehill.

The king sat in oan the questioning himsel, then wrote a book aboot it. Ower the twa centuries that followed, somewhere near twenty-five hunner people in Scotland were executed as witches. Maist ae them were women, and near aw ae them were poor.

It is the darkest thing in this book, and it is the wan bit that actually happened.
